Introduction

If you like playing Badminton, Tennis, Table Tennis, Volley Ball doubles matches with 4 or more of your friends but want to make the matches more organized, unique and fair? Then this excel based program is the perfect solution for you!

This program can create schedule of double matches to be played with 4 or more players.

Note!

This excel template/program is only supported in the windows version of excel.

Features

·       Creates unique doubles matches whenever possible (dependent on the inputs provided) i.e. no two players will play in the same team more than once and no two matches will be alike.

·       Handles both the cases when all players are able to play at the same time and when one player needs to rest.

·       Cycles through the resting players in sequence, so as to give equal opportunity to everyone to play and rest.

Quick Guide

This spreadsheet creates doubles matches based on the following mandatory inputs/criteria provided by the user in the sheet:

·       Number of players

·       Number of matches per court

·       Number of courts

In order to create valid matches, follow the steps outlined below:

·       Enter the number of players available to play.

·       Enter the number of valid matches per court that you want the program to calculate.

·       Enter the number of courts available to play double matches at the same time.

·       Click on the button, “Create Matches”.

The program will present valid matches on the same sheet below the, “Matches” heading. The players are numbered from 1 to the “Number of players” entered by the user. The first column, “Match Series”, numbers the series where series refers to the number of matches that can be played at the same time. If the “Number of courts” is 1 then the “Match Series” column will be empty as it does not make sense to show match series for just 1 court.  The second column, “Match number” just numbers all the matches that are presented to the user. The total number of matches is “Number of matches per court” times “Number of courts”.

Columns three to four, specify the players that make up Team 1 and columns five to six, specifies Team 2. Team 1 and Team 2 together form a match.

The column, “Resting player” is used to specify the player that will need to rest during a match series, when there is one extra player. For example, when there are 9 number of players and 2 courts then only 8 players can play on 2 courts (match series) and 1 player will need to rest for that series. The program can also handle two extra players, which could then play a single match at the same time as the ongoing doubles match/matches.

Detailed Description

In order to create matches, each of the inputs need to have values that are considered valid by the program. An explanation is given below about the valid values for the inputs.

Number of players

This mandatory input is the total number of players that will play the matches. This number needs to be 4 or above, as at least 4 players are required to play a doubles match. Furthermore, the modulus of “Number of players” and “Number of courts” should result in the number 0, 1 or 2. For example, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18 are valid number of players with number of courts being 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4 respectively. However, 1, 2, 3, 7, 11, 15 are invalid number of players.

Number of matches per court

This mandatory input is the number of valid matches to be presented to the user based on the “Number of players” and “Number of courts” inputs. If the “Number of matches” times the number of court” exceed the total number of combination of players that make up unique matches, then the program will present the user with an error message and request him/her to change the inputs.

Number of courts

This mandatory input specifies the number of courts available where double matches can be played at the same time.
